Fatal Pedestrian Accident on State Hill Road in Wyomissing

Reading Woman Dies After Being Struck by SUV

Authorities are investigating a tragic pedestrian accident in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania that resulted in the death of a 71-year-old woman from Reading.

Fatal pedestrian crashes remain one of the most serious roadway dangers in Pennsylvania, particularly near busy commercial corridors and shopping center entrances.

Crash Reported Near Berkshire Square Shopping Center

According to the Wyomissing Police Department, the crash occurred Friday, March 6, 2026, at approximately 1:15 p.m.

Police were dispatched to State Hill Road near the entrance to Berkshire Square Shopping Center after receiving reports of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle.

When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered Eugenia Polonski, 71, of Reading, who had been struck by a 2015 Lexus SUV.

The vehicle was reportedly driven by Margo Lemke of Molina, Illinois.

Emergency responders transported Polonski to Reading Hospital, where she tragically succumbed to her injuries.

Crash Investigation and Traffic Closure

The Pennsylvania State Police Accident Reconstruction Team assisted local authorities in investigating the crash.

During the investigation:

  • State Hill Road was closed between Berkshire Boulevard and Colony Drive
  • Traffic restrictions remained in place while investigators documented the crash scene
  • The roadway reopened at approximately 4:00 p.m.

Local emergency responders from several departments assisted police at the scene.

Driver Cited for Stop Sign Violation

After reviewing the crash investigation, the Berks County District Attorney’s Office determined that the driver violated Pennsylvania traffic law.

The driver was cited under Section 3323(b) of the Pennsylvania Vehicle Code, which governs duties at stop signs.

Authorities report the driver appeared before Magisterial District Judge David Yoch and pleaded guilty to the citation.

Pedestrian Accidents at Shopping Center Entrances

Pedestrian accidents frequently occur near shopping centers and commercial entrances, where drivers may be focused on turning or entering traffic rather than watching for pedestrians.

These areas often involve:

  • heavy vehicle congestion
  • turning vehicles
  • limited visibility
  • pedestrians crossing driveways

Even low-speed collisions can cause catastrophic injuries to pedestrians.

Legal Rights After a Fatal Pedestrian Accident in Pennsylvania

When a pedestrian is killed in a traffic accident, Pennsylvania law allows surviving family members to pursue a wrongful death claim.

These claims may provide compensation for:

  • funeral and burial costs
  • medical expenses prior to death
  • loss of financial support
  • loss of companionship

Pennsylvania also allows a survival action, which seeks compensation for the pain and suffering experienced by the victim between the injury and death.

These legal actions help ensure that negligent drivers are held accountable.

Pennsylvania Pedestrian Safety Reminder

Local law enforcement reminds both drivers and pedestrians to remain vigilant on Pennsylvania roadways.

Drivers should always:

  • stop fully at stop signs
  • check crosswalks and driveways for pedestrians
  • reduce speed near shopping centers and commercial areas

Pedestrians should also remain alert and use designated crossings whenever possible.
